Some of what they do has merit

Nothing they do, absolutely nothing, that we pay for, has any merit. If it did, we would employ them directly to do it.

Our Government is operating so far outside of its design parameters that this type of discussion is now futile. IMO the place to begin is eliminating income tax which would force massive reductions in power and programs, bringing the govt. more in line with the founders structure. Only then can a discussion vis-a-vis federal and state govts. become worthwhile.

Stop talking rubbish, this isn't the 30's or even the 40's. There are more more laws to protect workers than probably any other laws, then there are H&E laws and regs, not to mention plain and simple that employers today need their workers and treat them better than at any time.

The fact is we don't need the unions at all, so stop talking rubbish and put the money back into the front-line services. Unless of course you value the union barons millions and perks over nurses?

Who will protect workers if the unions have their teeth pulled? Workers are not the enemy, they are the people, and deserve protection from those who exploit them.

Public service workers (I am a teacher) need protection from the public, too. Would you risk teaching teens without an organisation to protect you from malicious accusations? If you would, you are crazy.

In the 1970s I worked for a large heavy engineering foundry. There was a worker "Old Stan" who was an absolute menace.

He would do ridiculous, stupidly dangerous things and one day he nearly killed myself and a colleague by a very serious breach of health and safety law.

We were laboratory technicians so complained to our union rep as we were members of TASS, the technical and managerial section of the AUEW.

I said: "We want to complain about "Old Stan"! He nearly killed us this morning! We want to report him to the union safety rep!"

Our rep looked very embarrassed. "You wont want to do that. "Old Stan" is the union's health and safety rep."

When we asked why the most dangerous man in the foundry was the union health and safety rep, he said: "Well, it was his turn."
